Pahlavi

1. The following fragards are given without any order: 1st fragard (pp. 1-33), 2nd fragard (pp. 34-90), 8th fragard (pp. 91-177), 5th fragard (pp. 178-305), 3rd fragard (pp. 306-390). After this, there are 4 sides blank. 12th fragard (pp. 1-21). At the beginning of the 12th fragard there is a note in Persian which states that this fragard was copied from a mss. of Mobed Rustam Sanjana.

It sums, with a part of the Šāyest-nē-šāyest and a part about the symbolism of the utensils used in the Dar-i-Meher, 677 pages.

8” x 6.25”. Half-bound in strong covers; neatly and legibly written in Iranian hand on thin European paper; no colophon, but the paper bears the water-mark of “D and G” and “1867”; pages marked in Persian numerals, but have varios foliations; written 12 ll. to the page.

Vīdēvdād 6-8, Phl. The mss. commences at V 6.41 (Spiegel’s) bāzāi zaha, bāzāi darānaē. The first line is Pahlavi, the second gives the traditional reading in Persian and the third line gives interlinear word-for-word Persian translation. Spiegel’s Nos. of the paragraphs are marked in English on the margin. 9.9” x 6”. Half-bound in strong covers; covers as well as folios sightly worm-eaten; thin country-paper; distinct handwritting; pp. 581 (marked in Persian numerals); written 12 ll. to the page.

Transcribed in Surat by Mobed Rustam Behram Darab Sorab Maneck Peshotan Sanjana, at the instance of Behdin Navājbai (Navlan), daughter of Behdin Kavas Bacha Kāhanji Wadia and wife of Behdin Kharshedji Ratanji Jivaji and completed on the day Tīr, month Amurdad, 1139 A.Y., 1826 Saṁvat, 1691 Shake. This mss. was presented as ašōdād to Ervad Hormaj bin Mobed Jamshed bin Behram bin Kamdin who was initiated a hērbed in memory of Navājbai’s mother Bai Jāiji. 13” x 10.3”. Bound in hard brown leather covers; country-made paper; ff. 304 (marked in Gujarati numerals) written in 17 ll. to the page.

Written 13 ll. to the page; sections of the different fragards, as given by Spiegel, marked on the margin latterly; the writting on f. 87 is struck off, being irrelevant; ff. 195-198 (upto l. 10) comprising some sections of the 8th fragard re-written in the midst of the 9th fragard are rejected; many folios misplaced by the binder; ff. 299-306 comprising chapters 53-107 (Spiegel’s) of the 18th fragard are bound upside down.

Vol. I: Vīdēvdād, fragards 1-4, Avestan and Pahlavi with Gujarati transliteration and translation. 12.5” x 7.8”. Well-bound in hard red leather covers; European paper, thick and durable; in very good condition; written handsome; pp. 1-438 (marked in Gujarati numerals) + ff. 439-518 (of which f. 493 and f. 509 are marked twice). The left-hand side page is divided into three columns, of which the first contains Avestan; the second, Pahlavi, and the third, transliteration of the Avestan into Gujarati and the right-hand side page contains a word-for-word translation of the Avestan, with the translation of Pahlavi commentaries. No colophon, but this and the following four volumes of the Vīdēvdād are written by Dastur Edalji Darabji Sanjana. These 5 volumes are presented by Mr. Jamshedji Bomonji Wadia.

The 18th fragard ends at p. 2093; then 48 folios are left blank for the 19th fragard; but this fragard is written on separate loose folios, containing pp. 54 of which the left-hand side page contains only Avestan and the right-hand side page, the translation of Avestan and Pahlavi. These separate folios, except pp. 44-54, are written in a different hand.
